How to Install an Outdoor Security Camera (Mounting & Weatherproofing)

An outdoor camera only performs if it is mounted, aimed and sealed correctly. Follow this field checklist.

1. Pick height and angle

Mount 2.5–3m high, angled down 15–30°. Cover entries and avoid backlight from windows or strong lights. Overlap fields so no zone is blind.

2. Mount the bracket

Use a universal wall bracket for bullets/turrets (conceals cable) or a ceiling plate for domes. Fix into a solid backing, not just render.

3. Route and seal the cable

Run Cat6 through the bracket channel. Seal the entry with silicone so water never tracks inside. For coax analog use RG59 siamese.

4. Power it

PoE is cleanest: one Cat6 to a weatherproof outdoor switch. No outlet at the camera. For non-PoE, a IP67 12V supply weatherproofs the power end.

5. Shield the lens

Add a rain cover to cut glare and thermal stress, extending housing life in sun or rain.
