School & Campus Surveillance: A Practical Coverage Plan
Campuses need scale: many channels, long retention, and clear policies. A 16-32 channel PoE backbone with scheduled recording keeps storage sane.
Published 2026-08-14
Schools and campuses are multi-building sites, so the plan is about backbone and policy as much as cameras.
Coverage priorities
All perimeter gates, main entrances, reception, corridors, stairwells, the yard/playground, bus drop-off and the staff car park. Use 4MP bullets for ranges and domes for interiors.
Backbone
Run a 16-port PoE switch per building block, uplinked to a 16-channel NVR or a 32-channel recorder at the server room. Add a 4-bay NAS for extended retention.
Retention and compliance
Set continuous recording at gates/entrances and motion-only in low-traffic halls to stretch storage. Check local rules for how long student footage may be kept, and post clear signage. A storage calculator shows the trade-off in TB.
Avoid private spaces
No cameras in toilets, changing rooms or staff break areas. Keep lenses on shared spaces and entrances only.
Frequently asked
How many cameras does a school need?
It scales with buildings: a small campus often starts at 16–32 channels across gates, halls, yards and car parks, growing as blocks are added.
How long should school footage be kept?
It depends on local law; 14–30 days is common for shared spaces. Use motion scheduling and a NAS to hit the target without overspending on disks.
Are SurveilForge accessories compatible with Hikvision, Dahua and Axis cameras?
Yes — they follow open surveillance standards (IEEE 802.3af/at PoE, RJ45, BNC, DC 12V/24V) and work with any brand using those standards, including Hikvision, Dahua and Axis. SurveilForge is an independent brand, not affiliated with any camera OEM.
Can I buy a single unit, or only wholesale?
Standard products are sold as single units in our shop. Custom or OEM branding and volume pricing start at a minimum order of 300 pieces.
