Fiber vs Ethernet for Long-Distance CCTV: When to Use Fiber
Fiber vs Ethernet for CCTV: use Cat6 under 100m, fiber for campus-scale or EMI-heavy backbones. A media converter bridges the two cheaply.
Published 2026-08-03
Cat6 is king for camera-to-switch drops, but once you cross a parking lot, a yard or a building, fiber wins. Here is the line.
Cat6 / Ethernet — up to 100m
Cheap, simple, PoE-capable. Perfect for the last meters to each camera. Past 100m it degrades.
Fiber — campus scale and noisy sites
A fiber media converter + SFP module carries video 20km over single-mode fiber, immune to lightning and EMI. Ideal between buildings, along fences, or near machinery.
How the two meet
Run fiber to a near-camera PoE switch, then short Cat6 to each camera. The converter is Layer-2 transparent — no reconfiguration, works with any brand.
When fiber is worth it
Distances over 100m, trenching is hard, or the route runs past power lines / rail. Otherwise Cat6 or a wireless bridge is simpler.
Frequently asked
Do I need special cameras for fiber?
No. You bridge with a media converter at each end; cameras stay standard RJ45 PoE. The fiber only carries the backbone.
Is fiber more expensive than Cat6 for CCTV?
Per meter fiber costs more, but it saves trenching and reaches km where Cat6 cannot. For one long backbone run it is usually the cheaper total solution.
Are SurveilForge accessories compatible with Hikvision, Dahua and Axis cameras?
Yes — they follow open surveillance standards (IEEE 802.3af/at PoE, RJ45, BNC, DC 12V/24V) and work with any brand using those standards, including Hikvision, Dahua and Axis. SurveilForge is an independent brand, not affiliated with any camera OEM.
Can I buy a single unit, or only wholesale?
Standard products are sold as single units in our shop. Custom or OEM branding and volume pricing start at a minimum order of 300 pieces.
