Night Vision Security Cameras: Infrared vs Full-Color, Which to Pick
IR night vision is free and discreet; full-color needs light but reads clothing and vehicles. Pick by what you must identify after dark.
Published 2026-08-14
Night vision is where most budget cameras quietly fail. Two technologies dominate, and they are not interchangeable.
Infrared (IR) — black-and-white, always on
An IR illuminator throws invisible light the camera's sensor reads, producing a clean monochrome image with no visible glow. It is discreet (intruders cannot see it) and draws no extra white light. Most domes and bullets ship with built-in IR; add a separate illuminator to extend range to 50m.
Full-color — needs light, reads detail
Full-color cameras use a large low-light sensor, or a white spotlight, to keep color after dark. Color matters when you need to identify a jacket, a license plate, or a vehicle. The trade-off: the spotlight is visible and can annoy neighbours. A 4K turret with a low-light sensor is the usual choice for entrances.
How to choose
- Perimeter / fence / alley: IR — you only need to see movement, and discretion helps.
- Driveway / gate / loading bay: full-color — you want to read plates and faces.
- Mixed: a camera that does IR by default and switches to color on a spotlight when motion triggers.
Pair either with a rain cover outdoors and size IR range to the longest shot. See our IP66 vs IP67 guide before mounting outside.
Frequently asked
Does infrared night vision show color?
No. IR produces a black-and-white image because it lights the scene with invisible infrared, not visible light. For color at night you need a low-light color sensor or a white spotlight.
How far does IR night vision reach?
Built-in IR typically covers 20–30m; an add-on illuminator extends that to 50m. Match the illuminator range to your longest camera-to-target distance.
Are SurveilForge accessories compatible with Hikvision, Dahua and Axis cameras?
Yes — they follow open surveillance standards (IEEE 802.3af/at PoE, RJ45, BNC, DC 12V/24V) and work with any brand using those standards, including Hikvision, Dahua and Axis. SurveilForge is an independent brand, not affiliated with any camera OEM.
Can I buy a single unit, or only wholesale?
Standard products are sold as single units in our shop. Custom or OEM branding and volume pricing start at a minimum order of 300 pieces.
