A PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) camera moves and zooms on command; a fixed camera stays put. PTZs cover more ground from one mount — but they cost more and draw more power.

Where PTZ wins

Use a PTZ for large, open areas you want to actively monitor: parking lots, yards, lobbies and warehouses. The 4MP 25× PTZ Speed Dome optically zooms to read a plate or face across a lot. A fixed camera is better for a known, unchanging view (a door, a counter, an aisle).

Power: PTZ needs 802.3at

PTZ motors and heaters pull more watts than a static dome, so they need 802.3at (30W), not 802.3af. Size a switch with headroom — our 16-port or 24-port PoE switch both deliver at-budget across all ports.

Coverage math

One PTZ can replace several fixed cameras in an open area, but it watches one spot at a time unless you set patrol tours. For full-time coverage of multiple points, fixed cameras (or a 8-port PoE switch with several) are simpler.

When to skip PTZ

Does a PTZ camera need more than one cable?

No. A PoE PTZ runs on a single Cat6 for data and power, same as a fixed camera — just make sure the switch port is 802.3at (30W).

Can a PTZ replace all my fixed cameras?

In a wide open area, yes for active monitoring, but it only frames one scene at a time. For constant coverage of several points, keep fixed cameras and add a PTZ for the big view.
