How to Choose an NVR: Channels, PoE and Storage That Fit
Count cameras, add headroom, then match PoE ports and disk bays. An 8-channel PoE NVR fits most homes; 16–32 channels and a NAS fit campuses.

The NVR is the brain — size it to cameras today and headroom for tomorrow.
Channels
Channels = camera inputs. An 8-channel PoE NVR runs eight cameras with built-in powered ports; a 16-channel covers a shop or small school; a 32-channel recorder handles a campus. Buy one or two channels of slack.
Built-in PoE vs separate switch
A PoE NVR powers cameras directly — simplest for 4–16 cameras. Beyond that, use a standalone PoE switch and a non-PoE recorder.
Storage bays
One disk bay suits 7–14 days; for 30+ days add a 4-bay NAS or pick a recorder with more bays. Run the numbers in the storage calculator before buying disks.
Codecs
Confirm H.265 support — it roughly halves disk and bandwidth versus H.264, which matters at 4MP and 8MP. Our resolution guide ties this together.
Frequently asked
How many channels do I need on an NVR?
One per camera, plus one or two of slack. Eight covers most homes; 16–32 suits shops, schools and campuses.
Do I need a PoE NVR or a separate switch?
For 4–16 cameras a PoE NVR is simplest — it powers the cameras. Larger systems use a standalone PoE switch and a non-PoE recorder.
Are SurveilForge accessories compatible with Hikvision, Dahua and Axis cameras?
Yes — they follow open surveillance standards (IEEE 802.3af/at PoE, RJ45, BNC, DC 12V/24V) and work with any brand using those standards, including Hikvision, Dahua and Axis. SurveilForge is an independent brand, not affiliated with any camera OEM.
Can I buy a single unit, or only wholesale?
Standard products are sold as single units in our shop. Custom or OEM branding and volume pricing start at a minimum order of 300 pieces.
