CCTV Cable Buying Guide: Cat6 vs RG59 vs Balun for IP & Analog

CCTV cable choice depends on the camera type: Cat6 for IP PoE, RG59 siamese for analog/HD-TVI, and UTP baluns to run analog video over network cable.

CCTV Cable Buying Guide: Cat6 vs RG59 vs Balun for IP & Analog

The "right" CCTV cable is the one that matches your camera's signal type. Get this wrong and you fight noise, dropouts and power loss. Here is the decision tree.

IP / PoE cameras → Cat6

IP cameras send data and power over a single Cat6 UTP cable (PoE). Our Cat6 305m box supports Gigabit to 100m and PoE without overheating. Keep runs under 100m; beyond that use a wireless bridge or fiber.

Analog / HD-over-coax → RG59 siamese

Analog, HD-TVI, HD-CVI and AHD cameras use coax. RG59 siamese cable bundles video + 18AWG power in one jacket — one pull instead of two. See RG59 Siamese 100m. Coax can run further than Cat6 but loses signal over long distances.

Run analog over Cat5e/Cat6 → UTP balun

If you already have network cable pulled, a UTP video balun pair converts BNC to RJ45 so analog video travels over Cat5e/Cat6. Cheap way to reuse existing cabling for HD-TVI/CVI/AHD.

Terminate cleanly

Finish coax with BNC connectors, power ends with DC plugs, and verify continuity with a cable tester before closing up.

Frequently asked

Can I use Cat6 for both IP and analog cameras?

Yes. Cat6 carries IP/PoE cameras directly, and with a UTP balun pair it also carries analog/HD-TVI/CVI/AHD video over the same cable. RG59 siamese remains the simpler choice for pure analog runs.

How far can Cat6 run for a PoE camera?

Keep Cat6 PoE runs under 100m to stay within the PoE and Ethernet standard. For longer distances use a wireless bridge, a PoE extender, or convert to fiber.

RG59 or Cat6 for a new install?

For a new IP-camera install, use Cat6 — it carries data and power together and supports 4K. Choose RG59 siamese only if you are wiring analog or HD-over-coax cameras.

Are SurveilForge accessories compatible with Hikvision, Dahua and Axis cameras?

Yes — they follow open surveillance standards (IEEE 802.3af/at PoE, RJ45, BNC, DC 12V/24V) and work with any brand using those standards, including Hikvision, Dahua and Axis. SurveilForge is an independent brand, not affiliated with any camera OEM.

Can I buy a single unit, or only wholesale?

Standard products are sold as single units in our shop. Custom or OEM branding and volume pricing start at a minimum order of 300 pieces.
